Plastic Tree 2010 Winter Tour [Re:chord]

A rainy day in Tokyo marked the end of a nation-wide, 13-stop tour. Rain is perhaps a persistent ghoul haunting Plastic Tree. With the opening of the venue pushed back ever so slightly, a sea of umbrellas quivered anxiously like flowers blooming, concealing countless fans waiting impatiently before the doors of C.C. Lemon Hall.

“Subarashii mirai nante naitte, nannimo nai jibunga iyade shinjiteta dake”
(I loathe myself for not having anything, so I had to believe there’s no grand future for me)

What could be a more fitting opening for Plastic Tree than these words, set to such a heartrending melody?

On this last day of torrential rain, vocalist Ryutaro gave a brief introduction. “Thank you and welcome. We are Plastic Tree,” followed, of course, by the band’s “super leader,” the so-called “Rain-god,” Tadashi.

“Somewhere in my heart, I’d been hoping [for rain]…” On this last day of those spring showers, Tadashi spoke rather shyly, his voice gentle and soft.

Caught in a whirlpool of words, swirling around and bubbling up within a tremendously moving groove, Ryutaro somehow evoked, at once, feelings of both misery and pleasure.

The fans, as if grasping at the ethereal atmosphere, stretched out their hands and raised their voices in unison for Ryutaro, who danced back and forth across the stage, occasionally swaying limply, as if a puppet held by strings.

Wrapping up the initial set, “DONADONA” phased smoothly into the appropriately-themed instrumental “Anten” (“Blackout”).

Silhouetted against a crimson screen stood four shadows, facing each other.

After such a powerful performance, despite the gloomy meaning of “Anten,” it felt like, somewhere, a bright light was shining.

Plastic Tree
