The day: Sunday, December 13th, the place: Kawasaki Club Citta, the event: MIX LEMONed JELLY 2009 feat. hide Birthday Party. It’s that time of year again, the time for parties, the time for fun, and the time for great music. This year promised to be another great event, with a great line up, including heidi, DJ-INA, Ra:IN and of course the hide video concert.
On the booths this year there was a great selection of new and old merchandise. For the first time, we could buy hide Kimono’s designed by Hi-HO. Taking there name from the first 2 letters of hide and the last 2 from Odasho, a famous, traditional kimono company from Kyoto. They have produced some amazing looking designs, featuring the ‘eye’ hide drew on his guitar, plus the Omamori was designed like Psycho Bear. Also, just released on December 1st, the hide x Kera, a Japanese ladies fashion company, line of jewelry was on sale. Displaying silver necklaces, Psycho Bear rings and ear-rings, and heart shaped hide x Kera safety pins. Along side these was hide’s make-up stall, the cell-phone fan site stall and the usual merchandise found at shows, T-Shirts, CD’s, posters and the like.
As the doors opened at 2pm and the venue started to fill up DJ FUMI and VJ Shrimp entertained us with a mix of rock and heavy metal. Balloons decorated the ceiling and the lights kept low. At 2.45 DJ FUMI introduced the event and WHO THE BITCH took to stage. For a genre that is dominated by male bands it was great to see a girl fronted band on stage. Playing a style of Japanese girl punk, they put on a great show, running through 7 songs and really enjoying them selves on stage. Some of the songs having a reggae/ska feel to them. A great effort from the girls, getting the crowd moving towards the end of their set.
Next up was one of my favourite J-Rock rock bands, heidi. Now these boys are always good, and they got a great welcome from the crowd as they came onto stage. The first song was a great choice, hide’s TELL ME. This really got the crowd excited. To me it was one of the best covers of TELL ME I have heard, Yoshihiko’s voice really suiting the song. They played a great set, every song having the crowd with their hands up. The light show was dark and fitted the music well, as the sound really seemed to fill the room. Ending on the single Tsubasa, the crowd seemed really pleased, and they left the stage to a huge cheer.
I’m not really sure what to say about the next artist. MURATORIX came onto stage wearing a fluffy hat, a black mask that covered the top half of his head and a pair of stripy boxer shorts. A bit of comedy to liven up and loosen up the crowd, and it worked. Introducing himself as playing ‘hide senpai (senior leader) guitar karaoke’ was a good start. Playing through a set list of hide covers to karaoke backing tracks on a 7string was a great new way to experience hide’s music. A talented musician who knew how to work the crowd. His last song dedicated to Hiroshi was a great crowd pleaser, which he encored 4 times, being only 3 words and 10 seconds long, this was easy to do: ‘Hiroshi, Matsumoto Hiroshi!’
After some more tunes from DJ FUMI and VJ Shrimp, ニューロテイカ (NEW ROTE’KA) took to the stage wearing some nice punk style suits. The lead singer dressed in a stars and stripes clown outfit with matching, colourful KISS esk make up to complete the look. Breaking into their tracks straight away and really enjoying the large stage. Being hide’s birthday party they played a fast punk birthday song dedicated to the great man himself. As the songs kept coming the crowd got more and more involved, not being able to stand still to the blue’s punk they were playing. If you like skater punk and rock and roll check these guys out.
It was now time for DJ INA to take to the DJ stand. Having worked with hide for many years he was highly anticipated by the crowd. Being a great DJ he mixed some of hide’s best songs to really please the crowd. During FISH SCRATCH FEVER [GO FISH BOYS!!!!] he, as usual, started to invite the crowd up onto stage. Filling the small area next to the DJ booth with anyone wearing hide style cosplay to over flowing, having to say no more at one point as he was being pushed away from the decks by them. Handing around a mike to the crowd who screamed, ‘GO FISH BOYS!’ and, ‘We are X’ into it, really getting the crowd up. Fist’s and dolls were in the air and pink hair was flying about. When ‘Miscast’ came on he cleaned the stage out and got a few more people up to play air guitar and just jam out on stage. The lead singer from Nyuroteika came running on stage with a broom and joined in the mayhem. For ‘TELL ME’, again he changed the crowd, now only in Japan will you get people up on stage and then trying to hide at the back, letting the more colourfull people take centre stage. Closing with ‘Misery’ and clearing the stage left people wanting more. Another great set from DJ INA.
After DJ INA came Ra:IN. Playing their unusual style of dark instrumental rock was a good change of pace. DIE was having a lot of fun on stage, running around and just going as crazy as he does. The whole band played well, putting a lot of feeling into the music, bringing a darker mode to the event. During ‘Psychogenic’ DIE got onto the mike and screamed the words, making the hairs on my arms stand up. As ‘Wish’ started DIE got onto his key-tar to run around the stage and work the crowd. It was great to PATA again pleasing the crowd with his blues rock guitar as well. Closing with the softer ‘With’n You’ ended their set to screams of DIE and PATA from the crowd and hundreds of hide dolls flying in the air.
A band I have wanted to see for a while, but never had the chance came up next, Chirolyn&DIE. Opening with a few slow, soft songs and Chirolyn screaming Happy New Year Hide into the mike a few times by mistake, confusing everyone, even himself, and trying to claim that he doesn’t speak Japanese so doesn’t know what to say. Breaking out into some harder, faster, good old rock and roll songs really got the energy of the venue up. The last two songs saw DIE going crazy on stage, diving and jumping all over the place, even at one point ending up with his trousers around his ankles, maybe best you don’t ask about that one. Ending on their best song and filling it with cries of ‘hide’ and great blues solo’s and riffs left me feeling buzzed and wanting more. Taking their bows as the curtain went down.
The lights stayed low after the curtain came down and huge white screen was lowered in front of the stage. The time had come for the final, the most anticipated part of the night, what everyone had been waiting for. hide’s special video clip show! With a flash of lights, a bang of pyro-techniques and an explosion of pink and silver streamers over the crowd, the show started. The first video up was ‘Miscast’, and straight away everyone in the crowd had their hands and dolls up in the air. Pink hair started to fly and literally everyone in the hall started to move and sing along. Moving onto ‘DICE’ and then ‘BACTERIA’ gave a heavier, darker feel to the night again. ‘EYES LOVE YOU’ brought a lighter feel, and gave the crowd a little bit of a breather, before ‘Beauty & Stupid’. Next up was ‘ELECTRIC CUCUMBER’ by Zilch. This was great to see, showing hide as he worked hard to get recognized outside of Japan. During ‘Junk Story’ the balloons on the ceiling were released and people scrambled to grab them and wave them in time to this great song. ‘TELL ME’ and ‘ever free’ came up next as the crowd was working into a frenzy of pink hair and hide dolls. As ‘Pink Spider’ came on the crowd was really getting into the spirit, the video offering a dark back ground to the sea of pink in the hall. When ‘Pink Spider’ ended a special message appeared on the screen. Next year, on May 2nd, it will be the 13th Memorial for hide. Our Pink Spider will be playing again on this special day, a day of remembrance and celebration of the life of a great musician and man, hide. To close the night, ‘Rocket Dive’, the track chosen by the fans as his greatest song was a great way to end. In a blaze of pyro-techniques, pink hair, pink and silver ribbons, and hide dolls, the crowd went wild. As the song came to an end all you could hear were screams of ‘hide, hide, hide’, no one wanting the night to end.
As the lights came up on the crowd and people started to make their way home, a great feeling filled the room. People had had an amazing day, all dedicated to the man we love, hide! See you again in Spring. Happy Birthday hide.

12月13日（日）川崎 Club CITTA’ MIX LEMONed JELLY 2009 feat. hide Birthday Party – 毎年恒例のあのイベントがやって来た! 素敵な音楽に身を任せ、最高に楽しい時間を過ごせるあのパーティーだ。 今年も heidi., DJ INA, Ra:IN、そしてhideのビデオコンサートを含む素敵なラインアップのもと、期待された通りの素晴らしいイベントになった。
今年のブースには、定番から新作に至るまでの様々なグッズが展開された。そして今回初の試みとして、「Hi-Ho」がデザインしたhide着物が公開された。Hi-Hoとは、hideの名前の ‘hi’と京都の呉服の老舗ブランドODASHOの最後の2文字 ‘HO’が合体して命名されたブランドである。hideが自分のギターに描いた「目」を素材に最高にクールなデザインの着物がプロデュースされ、サイコベアをモチーフにしたキュートなお守りも販売された。そして、12月初日に発売開始したばかりのアクセサリー「hide x KERA」がお披露目。シルバーネックレスを始めサイコベアの指輪やイヤリング、ハート型の「hide x KERA」安全ピンなどがディスプレイに並んだ。隣には「特殊メイク体験ブース」が設けられ、またその横にはモバイルファンクラブ「JETS」のコーナーが。そしてもちろん、お馴染みのライブグッズやTシャツ、CD、ポスターなどがブースには勢揃いした。
2時のオープンと同時に会場のスペースはすぐに埋まり始め、まずはDJ FUMIとVJ Shrimpのロックとヘヴィメタルのミックスが観客を踊らせる。色鮮やかな風船で飾られたフロアでは、照明は少しだけ落とされたまま。2時45分頃、DJ FUMIによるイベント紹介とともに、WHO THE BITCHがステージに上がった。男性のライヴ参加メンバーが圧倒的に多い今回のイベント中、唯一のガールズバンドのパフォーマンスを拝見できるのも大きな楽しみだった。ジャパニーズガールズパンクスタイルで演奏するWHO THE BITCHは7曲を披露し、心からステージを楽しんでいる様子だった。パンクだけではなく、中にはレゲエやスカを漂わせる曲も。全力疾走するバンドに合わせて観客も全力疾走で加速し始めた。
次は、僕が個人的に大好きなJ-Rockバンドのひとつであるheidi.。彼らはいつも最高のパフォーマンスを繰り広げ、ステージは常に観客から大声援で満ちる。1曲目は素晴らしい選曲、なんとhideの「TELL ME」。観客は最高に盛り上がった。 今回の「TELL ME」は今まで聞いたカヴァーの中でも最高とも言えるほどで、義彦の声は本当に曲と一つになっている。観客は手を高く挙げheidi.に応えた。曲の世界観に合ったダークなライティングと共に、彼らの音楽は会場一杯に拡がった。最後に「翼」を演奏し、大歓声の中heidi.はステージを後にした。
次のアーティストに関して… 僕は何を言えばいいのだろう。MURATORIXはふわふわの頭、顔の上半分を覆う黒いマスク、そしてストライプのボクサーパンツといった出で立ちで登場した。彼が見事な程に笑いを取ったお陰で会場はたちまち明るくなり和やかな雰囲気に。’hide先輩ギターカラオケ’ の演奏で好調なスタートを切った彼は、アレンジされたカラオケバックトラックによるhideカヴァーのセットリストを7弦ギターで披露。hideの音楽の新しい楽しみ方を発見させてくれた。観客の煽り方を本当に心得ている天才である。最後の曲は松本裕士氏に捧げる曲で観客を余りにも喜ばせたため4回もアンコールを求められた彼は、それに応えるのに3言… たったの10秒しかかからなかった。彼はただ ‘ヒロシ！松本裕士！’と応えたのであった。
DJ FUMIとVJ Shrimpの音楽がしばし流れた後、ニューロティカが素敵なパンクルックでステージに登場。ヴォーカルのATSUSHIはスターとストライプが一杯のピエロの服に身を纏い、その容姿にフィットするカラフルなKISSメイク。ステージに上がりすぐに演奏を開始したニューロティカもまたこの大舞台を心から楽しんだ。バースデイパーティーに因んでニューロティカから偉大な彼へと捧げるバースデイソングは、高速パンクチューンから始まった。曲を重ねていく程に観客はニューロティカの世界に入り込み、彼らの繰り出すブルースパンクにノらずにはいられなかった。スケートパンクやロックンロールが好きな人は彼らを見逃すな！
そして、DJ INAがDJブースに入る番だ。hideと一緒に長年作業をしてきた彼には否が応にも期待を抱かずにはいられない。素晴らしいDJでもある彼は、hideの珠玉の曲たちをミックスし観客を大歓喜の渦に巻き込んだ。「FISH SCRATCH FEVER [GO FISH BOYS!!!!]」をプレイする彼は、いつものごとく観客をステージに呼び込み始めた。溢れ返る勢いで彼自身も追い出されそうになりながら、DJブースの隣の小さなスペースにhideのコスプレをした多数の観客が所狭しと呼び込まれた。INAは皆にマイクを回しファンは ‘GO FISH BOYS!’や‘We are X’と叫ぶ。会場は大歓声で満たされた。拳とhide人形が高く上げられ、ピンクの髪は舞い続ける。「Miscast」が始まった時、ステージ上の観客は一旦フロアに戻され、新たに別の数人ステージに上げられエアギターのバトルが繰り広げられる。その時、ニューロティカのATSUSHIがホウキに乗ってこのカオスに飛び込んできた。「TELL ME」が流れると彼は再び観客を入れ替えステージの上は、これはおそらく日本だけだと思うが… 自ら上がったのにもかかわらず自分より派手な格好の者をセンターに立たせ自分は後ろへ後ろへと隠れようとする人で一杯になった。「MISERY」を最後にステージから皆が下ろされた。誰もが名残を惜しんでいた。今年もDJ INAを聞けて本当に良かった。
DJ INAの後は、Ra:INの登場だ。彼らの類稀なスタイルのダーク・インスト・ロックにより、イベントのペースは完全に変えられた。DIEは楽しそうにステージを飛び回り、いつものようにはしゃぎ続けた。洗練されたプレイには数多くの感情が込められ、イベントのダークサイドが見事に表現された。「Psychogenic」でDIEは身の毛が弥立つ程の声でマイクに叫ぶ。そして「Wish」ではギターキーボードを携えステージを飛び回り、観客を煽る。PATAも得意のブルースロックギターで幾度も観客を湧かせた。柔らかな印象の「With’n You」で彼らのステージは終わりを告げ、‘DIE!’ ‘PATA!’の叫び声と沢山のhide人形が宙を舞った。
兼ねてより観たいと思いつつも、その機会がなかったのが次のバンド… Chirolyn&DIEによる ‘金角VS銀角’である。スローで柔らかな曲を何曲か披露した後、Chirolynが間違えて ’Happy New Year hide!’ と何度も叫んでしまい彼自身ですら困惑してしまったが、自分は日本語がしゃべれないから何言っていいかわからねえんだよ！と釈明をするChirolynだった。続いてはよりハードで高速な定番ロックンロール・チューンが続き、会場のテンションは最高潮に。最後の2曲の間、ダイブやジャンプで縦横無尽に暴れまくるDIEは、ふと気がつけばズボンが膝あたりにずり下がる… まぁこの件に関してはそっとしおいた方がいいだろう。最後の曲は彼らのベストソング、’hide!’ を叫ぶ声と素敵なブルースソロに酔いしれる。名残惜しくこのまま終わって欲しくはない気持ちで胸が一杯だった。そして、彼らの深々なお辞儀によって幕は下りた。
幕が下りてからもしばらく照明は落とされたまま、上から大きな白いスクリーンがステージ前に降ろされる。そう、遂に… 今夜誰もが待ち詫びてきたこの時が来たのだ。hideのスペシャル・フィルムギグだ！閃光、爆音、火柱と共に、ピンク&シルバーのリボンが頭上に炸裂する。宴は始まった。最初に演奏されたのは‘Miscast’、眼の前にhideが映し出された瞬間、誰もが手と人形を高く挙げる。ピンクの髪が舞い踊り、言葉通り会場の全員が合唱を始めた。「DICE」と「BACTERIA」は夜をヘヴィーに、ダークに染める。「EYES LOVE YOU」では再び光が戻り、続く「Beauty & Stupid」へ突入する前の一時の暇となる。続くZilchの「ELECTRIC CUCUMBER」。世界へ挑むhideを映し出すこの作品に心が震える。「Junk Story」の最中、皆は落ちてきた無数の風船を大歓喜で掴み取り曲に合わせて振り始め、この曲に思いを込める。「TELL ME」～「ever free」と続き、フロアはピンクの髪とhide人形で溢れ狂乱の場に。そして「ピンクスパイダー」、全員の気持ちが1つになり、映し出される映像からは桃色の海に暗黒の波が拡がって行く。「ピンクスパイダー」終演後には、スペシャルメッセージがスクリーンに映し出された。来年の5月2日はhideの13回忌… 我々のピンクスパイダーは、この日もまた奏でられるだろう。hideというひとりのミュージシャン、そしてひとりの人間の生涯を追憶し、心より祝いたい。彼の最高傑作として選ばれた「ROCKET DIVE」によって夜宴は幕を降ろした。舞い踊る火花、ピンクの髪、ピンクとシルバーのリボン、そしてhide人形。フロアは狂喜に満たされる。曲が終わる時響き渡っていたのは、この夜が明けない事を願う‘hide, hide, hide’という叫び声… ただそれだけだった。
暖かな何かに包まれたフロアが光に照らされた時、皆は家路に付き始めた。我々が愛するhideというひとりの男に捧げた素晴らしい1日だった。hide、誕生日おめでとう。また春に会いましょう。
